On November 3, as part of the CINEMANIA French Film Festival, we had the privilege of attending the Film Fund Luxembourg cocktail reception at the Montreal PHI Centre. It gave us the opportunity to meet Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, and Patrick Even, representative of Luxembourg for Tourism; and talk about why you should put traveling to their country on your bucket list.
As Patrick was happy to tell us, if you are looking for a destination that offers a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and mouthwatering delights, look no further than Luxembourg, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Europe.
Just a stone’s throw away from Paris, this charming country has plenty to satisfy travelers seeking new and exciting experiences. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a culture vulture, a wine aficionado, or a foodie, Luxembourg has something to tickle your fancy, whether you’re exploring alone, with your partner, as a group, or with the whole family.
Let’s start with the vibrant capital city of Luxembourg. This millennial city, which embraces its historical heritage while looking to the future, is a melting pot of culture and vitality. Its UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical remains coexist harmoniously with contemporary architecture, serene rivers, and breathtaking valleys. Embark on leisurely walks or bike rides to uncover the secrets of this “Gibraltar of the North.”
But let’s not forget the important things in life — food, shopping, and nightlife! Luxembourg boasts a wide array of charming cafes, bars – such as L’Observatoire du Sofitel – and restaurants that serve up culinary traditions with soul. Imagine savouring delectable dishes and indulging in unique shopping experiences amidst small boutiques and galleries.
And as the sun begins its descent, the city comes alive with vibrant nightlife. At the magical hour of 5 to 7, the streets, bars, and cafes buzz with joyous chatter. Don’t be surprised if the revelry continues well into the night — Luxembourgers know how to have a good time!
Medieval and Renaissance buildings punctuate the city’s landscape, reminding visitors of the country’s powerful past. Some of these architectural marvels have been transformed into charming hotels, renowned restaurants, and cultural hubs. Immerse yourself in Luxembourg’s history with a romantic getaway to one of these enchanting locations.
If you’re yearning to explore centuries of Luxembourgish history in a single day, venture to the Valley of the Seven Castles.
Here, you’ll find a concentration of medieval architecture that rivals few others in Europe. Prepare to be awestruck as you journey through time and soak in the fascinating stories that these castles hold.
But Luxembourg’s appeal extends beyond its capital. The picturesque Moselle valley, with its sun-kissed vineyards, offers exceptional landscapes and wines that embody the region’s laid-back lifestyle. Nestled between France and Germany, the valley treats you to breathtaking views of both countries, inviting you to indulge in a cultural tapestry that spans over a thousand years.
With a history dating back 225 million years, the Moselle region has been shaped by Celtic and Roman influences. Today, it proudly upholds its gastronomic traditions, skillfully blending the bounties of its vineyards, orchards, and rivers.
Sip on exquisite wines like riesling and pinots, savour the succulent flavours of cherries and mirabelle plums, and delight in the catch of the day, which may include trout, pike, or zander. Your taste buds are in for an unforgettable journey!
So, whether you’re seeking outdoor adventures, cultural exploration, or culinary delights, Luxembourg promises an unforgettable experience. Embrace the thrill of discovery, immerse yourself in centuries-old history, and let your taste buds dance with delight. Luxembourg awaits, ready to unveil its hidden treasures and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
