Walkable Montreal Neighborhoods! Let’s start you off with overlooked neighborhood: Villeray. It is currently under construction, so we curated a mix of last and this Summer shots!

Montreal Walkable Neighborhoods – Rue de Castelnau Est

1. Villeray (Rue de Castelnau Est)

The soul of Villeray isn’t on Saint-Denis, it’s along Rue de Castelnau Est. Independent cafés, neighborhood restaurants, flower shops, and one of Montréal’s most walkable village atmospheres make it feel worlds away from downtown.

Don’t miss:

• Jean-Talon Market
• Parc Jarry
• Café culture
• Small independent boutiques

Victoria Village is my fave Westmount Walkable Montreal neighborhood.

2. Victoria Village (Westmount)

Often overshadowed by Greene Avenue, Victoria Avenue feels more local. European bakeries, gourmet food shops, wine boutiques and leafy sidewalks give it a quiet elegance. (Having gone to Victoria Arts Summer camp for a few years as a kid, my sunset bike rides on Victoria had me discover the hood when it was much less developped!).

Montreal most walkable Neighborhoods – The Lookout- Westmount

There is nothing quite like walking (biking or driving) through upper Westmount and seeing all the beautiful old victorian mansions, lined with old trees and gorgeous gardens. Many look like small castles!

3. Westmount Summit Lookout

Most visitors head to Mount Royal Kondiaronk Belvedere. Locals know the Westmount Summit offers one of the city’s most peaceful panoramic views with far fewer crowds.

• Skyline of downtown
• Sunset
• Bird watching
• Photography
• Romantic hangout

Old Montreal’s most charming street – Best Walkable neighborhoods – St-Amable

4. Rue Saint-Amable (Old Montréal)

Only steps from Place Jacques-Cartier, yet remarkably quiet. Cobblestones, ivy-covered stone buildings and hidden terraces make this one of the prettiest streets in the city.

Not to miss:

•  ivy-covered stone façades

• Hidden cafés and intimate terraces, like Olympico in William Grey

• La Diperie ice cream bar

• One of Old Montréal’s most photogenic streets (especially with night lights)

• A short walk to Place Jacques-Cartier, Bonsecours Market, and the Old Port

Tiniest Street Hidden Gem in Quartier Latin!

Most walkable neighborhood in Montreal – Quartier Latin’s Emery street

Rue Emery (Quartier Latin)

While Saint-Denis gets all the attention, Rue Emery has quietly become one of Montréal’s most enjoyable pedestrian spaces with patios, festivals and a relaxed atmosphere.

Not to miss:

•  Little known Friperie called FRIPERIE!

• Methe et Couscous a North African resto with 90s prices!

• Little cafes and bars dotting the streets

• Food trucks and the Quartier Latin Theatre

• A short walk to the Old Port, Chinatown

BONUS Pleateu EST

Prince-Arthur is one of the most classic and longest walkable plateau streets.

7. Prince-Arthur East

The eastern end of Prince-Arthur has regained its local charm with cafés, bookstores and independent restaurants tucked away from the busier stretches.

• Arthur’s Nosh Bar – Montréal brunch favourite

• Café Tere – Excellent specialty coffee & pastries

• Les Deux Gamins – Charming Parisian-style bistro

• Square Saint-Louis – Iconic Victorian park just steps away

• Seasonal pedestrian terraces & patios – The best way to soak up Prince-Arthur Est’s relaxed atmosphere

8. MORE Plateau EAST!

Duluth, runs paralell to Prince-Arthur, but is further up/

Rue Duluth Est

One of Montréal’s prettiest pedestrian-friendly streets. Terraces spill onto the sidewalks beneath mature trees, creating an almost European atmosphere.

This one used to be super ghetto and is now ghetto-chique ;)

Ontario street in Hochelaga has a HUGE pedestrian stretch! With all sofrts of things…

Promenade Ontario East (Hochelaga)

A revitalized neighborhood full of local cafés, breweries and independent shops that’s still overlooked by many visitors. Most people still remember “The Hoche” as being a cracky shanty town of junkies and crime. Things have changed and are constantly improving. Worth checking out while there:

• Hélicoptère
• Marché Maisonneuve
• Spedzira Caffè

And lastly, an affordable foodie paradise…. 

Wellington street in Verdun is Montreal’s LONGEST walkable, uninterrupted promenade.

Repeatedly ranked among Canada’s coolest streets, yet surprisingly absent from many Montréal itineraries. Restaurants, bars and the nearby river make it ideal for an afternoon wander. I go here monthly by bike and here are my faves, many are thanks to my food-adventure-friend Rob retired restauranteur (TITANIC) turned leisurely foodie!

• Le Trèfle Taverne Irlandaise (great brunch on weekends)

• Les Street Monkeys (creative Cambodian cuisine)

• Ô Petit Paris (French bakery & pastries)

OLD Port, but keep walking EAST!

Get away from the tourists and walk PAST “The Main” AKA St-Laurent headed EAST and you will find a few gems… Notre-Dame, St-Paul and De-La-Commune have some Eastern gems…

De La Commune is home to a little known under-the-trees canopy walk along some little stones inbetween the bike path and sidewalk

To really get to the fun hidden gem stuff, you will have to walk PAST the Bonsecours market (big silvery dome) and even past the little cathedral….

If you see the 3 Brasseurs on De-La-Commune, you are not far enough, keep going ;)

Eastern Old Port

Skip the busiest section of the Old Port and continue east, where quieter waterfront paths, historic warehouses and scenic river views reward curious explorers. Enjoy a canopy treets walk, and find old lesser known bars, restos and cafés… here are 3 I enjoy:

• Café de Mercanti (350 Notre-Dame Est – excellent Italian café)

• BreWskey Taproom (385 Rue de la Commune Est – craft brewery with a quieter waterfront location)

• The Coldroom (85 Rue Saint-Paul Est – hidden speakeasy behind an unmarked black door; #followtheduck)
