From the Cosmos to the Streets: Montreal’s Fall Art Scene Awakens
September has barely entered the room and Montreal’s art scene is already making noise.
This week marks that sweet spot when summer energy collides with the beginning of the fall cultural season: galleries reopen, vernissages multiply, artists return to the city, and suddenly Thursday night requires an itinerary.
From cosmic counter-narratives and diasporic landscapes to street photography and ecological art inside one of Montreal’s most iconic structures, Best Kept MTL’s Top 5 Montreal Art Exhibits for September 3–5 take us across the city and considerably further in imagination.

1. Une assemblée pour le cosmos — Galerie de l’UQAM

Curated by Antoine Bertron, Une assemblée pour le cosmos brings together Marcela Armas & Gilberto Esparza, Tabita Rezaire, Skawennati, Suzanne Treister & Patricia Domínguez and Jesse Tungilik.
Rather than treating outer space as the next frontier waiting to be conquered, the exhibition looks toward ancestral, Indigenous, community and more-than-human ways of understanding our relationship with the cosmos. 2. Josepha Dumas — Là où les routes se croisent

What happens when several places can simultaneously feel like home?
Haitian-French multidisciplinary artist Josepha Dumas explores migration, memory, displacement and belonging through landscapes that refuse to respect geographical boundaries.
Haiti, Montreal and New York begin to overlap. Seasons collide. Memories reshape geography. The road becomes less about getting somewhere and more about everything we carry with us along the way.
Dumas works across painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, sound and video, building a visual language informed by her own experience between Haiti, Miami, Germany and Montreal.

3. Montreal Street Photography Festival — Foil Gallery

The city is already an exhibition. Street photographers simply notice it before the rest of us do.
The Montreal Street Photography Festival takes over Foil Gallery and celebrates photography built around those fleeting urban moments that can’t really be staged: glances, gestures, shadows, strangers and beautifully accidental compositions.
Foil itself makes an appropriate setting — part gallery, part design-forward cultural hangout in Mile-Ex — for an event that sits somewhere between traditional exhibition and urban gathering.

4. Typologies — 5e Biennale d’Arts visuels

Never assume the most interesting art in Montreal is hiding behind a commercial gallery door.
Typologies, the fifth edition of the Biennale of Visual Arts professors at Cégep du Vieux Montréal, showcases the diversity of practices coming from one of Quebec’s largest visual-arts departments.
Works spread through the Agora and fourth-floor vitrines, transforming the school itself into exhibition territory. The official program emphasizes the range of approaches developed by the participating artist-professors — which is precisely what makes this one interesting.
Why go? It’s free, experimental and conveniently positioned for anyone building themselves a proper Thursday-night vernissage crawl.
5. Un monde en commun — Biosphère
Opening: Saturday, September 5
Exhibition: September 5, 2026 – May 2, 2027
📍 Biosphère — 160 chemin du Tour-de-l’Isle, Montréal
Saturday calls for something different.
Un monde en commun arrives at the Biosphère after an earlier presentation at Fondation Grantham and asks us to reconsider one rather fundamental question: how exactly are we choosing to inhabit this planet?
The collective exhibition examines the visible and invisible relationships connecting plants, birds, fish and humans. Instead of approaching ecology solely through catastrophe, the artists explore ideas of interdependence, care, listening and hospitality toward other forms of life.
And then there’s the venue.
Experiencing contemporary environmental art inside Buckminster Fuller’s extraordinary Expo 67 geodesic dome gives this final stop an atmosphere no conventional white-cube gallery can really replicate.

The beauty of this week’s Top 5 Montreal Art Exhibits is how little the five shows have in common.
