THE LAKE: Les Grands Ballets Reimagines Swan Lake for a New Generation
There are ballet productions that preserve tradition and then there are productions that completely reshape how audiences emotionally experience a classic. This spring into summer, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens returns to Place des Arts with The Lake, a bold and cinematic reinterpretation of Swan Lake that feels hauntingly modern, visually hypnotic, and emotionally layered.
From May 28 to June 7, 2026, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier transforms into a dreamlike world of moonlight, identity, glamour, and illusion as artistic director Ivan Cavallari unveils one of the company’s most ambitious productions in recent years.
Unlike traditional productions of Swan Lake, The Lake transports audiences into the polished and psychologically fragile world of a commercial advertising campaign. Through this contemporary reinterpretation, the story follows Odette as she confronts the shaping of her image, the erosion of self, and the emotional tension created by her rival Odile.
The result is a production that feels deeply relevant to modern culture while still preserving the emotional beauty and technical precision that made Swan Lake timeless in the first place. And visually? It already looks absolutely breathtaking.
Bringing together 75 performers on stage alongside the Les Grands Ballets Orchestra under the direction of conductor Dina Gilbert, The Lake merges Tchaikovsky’s legendary Swan Lake score with his emotionally devastating Symphony No. 6 “Pathétique.” The atmosphere created through this combination feels darker, more cinematic, and emotionally immersive than a traditional ballet staging.
Ivan Cavallari’s choreography remains rooted in neoclassical ballet while introducing a modern theatrical intensity that feels perfectly aligned with today’s audiences. The iconic visual language of Swan Lake remains intact, elegant white tutus, moonlit staging, synchronized movement but now exists inside a more psychologically complex world.
One of the most striking aspects of the production is how the stage itself becomes part of the storytelling. Blue-toned lighting, reflective surfaces, and minimalist scenography create an atmosphere suspended somewhere between fantasy and reality. The character of von Rothbart also receives a fascinating reinterpretation in The Lake. Rather than appearing as a singular villain, he manifests through three darker figures hidden inside the creative production team itself, a subtle commentary on image-making, manipulation, and control inside contemporary culture.
For longtime ballet lovers, this production offers a refreshing new lens through which to rediscover one of the most iconic works ever created. For newer audiences, it becomes a cinematic entry point into ballet through emotion, visual storytelling, and immersive theatrical staging.
