Montreal-bred visual artist Tina Cartier makes a statement yet again. This time she’s joining forces with Galerie DBC owner Jennifer-Lee Barker to instigate LIPSTICK RIOT — a furiously feminine exhibition from September 22 to October 3 — with a punk-rock-powered vernissage on Friday, September 24.

Known for her unconventional, edgy, mixed media pieces of femmes fatales, this latest art exhibition is dedicated to women empowering other women.

“Colourful, rebellious, with a glamorous twist” is the mantra of the Friday vernissage that will kick off at 5pm with a girl’s night cocktail; which, around 8pm, will feature anarcha-feminist punk band The Lef7overs, who are known for their Riot grrrl inspired sound.

The sisterhood doesn’t stop there: this event is an opportunity for guests to snatch exclusive pieces from Cartier and her collaboration with artist Mary-Eve Ruel, a fellow rebel with a heart. Cartier is all about women sticking together, and is happy to support Ruel for the first public exhibition of her “Uplifted by Meve” line of artworks made from upcycled vintage ware.

Mastermind behind the Conseil des artistes québécois and the Montreal Erotic Art Festival, Jennifer-Lee Barker is a discreet yet driving force in the city’s underground art community. It therefore comes as no surprise that she would let her gallery, near the old Drugstore Bourbon Complex, set the stage for a “lipstick riot”.

So don’t walk, grab your ladies and run to catch this exhibition, which is sure to leave you uplifted by raw girl power.
