What to Expect at Igloofest’s Boiler Room

Those in favour of the more artistic side to underground dance music, the term coined “Boiler Room” (UK origin) has become the source of what is taking place in the dance scene. Igloofest 2020 edition lives up to its tenure bringing you underground grooves, back in the day hits, questionably dressed hipsters with the worst dance move. Simply put, Boiler Room is quite a thing.

Over the years the concept has fined tuned its concept bringing younger crews platforming niche scenes. And they have succeeded, so they do feel relevant again. It grew from an isolated London music project in 2010 to become the premiere international live underground music streaming service it is today. For this edition Boiler Room & Igloofest Montreal come together unite for the coldest of dances. Time to show off how Montreal embraces the dead of winter by bringing out the heat for a global broadcast straight from the Old Port.

1 – Its lineups

They pick only the finest, best, the brightest when it comes to their lineups, and there are no hold back in their selections. They are music connoisseurs giving every well deserving genre a chance to shine. They also are not afraid to give DJ sets to the most unexpected of talent from Manara’s Bollywood and dance floor specials, to jungle champion Goldie’s fully 90s set of jungle and drum’n’bass to legendary Carl Cox with 42 million views on YouTube alone, the most-watched Boiler Room set of all time!

2. Impressive variety of music styles

Boiler Room has always bridged the gap between championing the underground and making it accessible to see your favourite artists. “We pride ourselves on having our ears to the ground,” says Tom Wiltshire, head of music. “We cover lots of genres, but it’s about DJs who are pushing boundaries.” The most successful events are about creating an atmosphere that feels a bit lawless, a bit loose – not dangerous in any way – but allowing people to have fun and express themselves. We make sure we set it up so that when you walk into the room, people are dancing – and all over the place, not just peacocking around the DJ. That’s what you want to create.”

After the party, the fun doesn’t end as Boiler Room hipsters enjoy their video views, tags and notifications from fellow Boileroomers that they are on a Boiler Room TV.

Despite the casual vibe of the Boiler room, try not to interrupt the talent, just because it’s a less formal show, doesn’t mean you can just walk up and the DJ wants to have a chat, let the artists work!

4. The Controversial Sets

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and the Boiler Room is no exception to that rule. Like Icarus flying too close to the sun, A good intention is meaningless unless it is followed by a good action. It does happen for some of its entertainers to take the helm of the Boiler Room and fall a tad short.

One of the most controversial sets in recent history was when Boiler Room and Richie Hawtin invited synth-pop goddess Grimes to throw down a set. Many argued that Grimes was trolling the Boiler Room as she chose to go with some quintessential pop selections, and the hipsters apparently were not having it.
