Calling all Junglists & Garage Steppers | UK Bass Music icon DEEKLINE performs on Saturday!
On Saturday December 10th the D32 Crew has prepared a special treat for underground electronic music heads. They are presenting a performance at Newspeak by U.K. Bass Music icon DEEKLINE! As a producer and DJ, for over 20 years he’s been making booties bounce with his funky blend of Breakbeat, Jungle, Drum & Bass and Garage music. While also being a pioneer of the genre known as Breakstep.
Deekline hit the London electronic scene like earthquake and by the late 1990’s was running the UK’s biggest pirate radio station Flex FM. In 1999 he founded Rat Records to release his first single “I Dont Smoke” which reached #11 on the UK Singles Chart. It is considered to be the first Breakstep track and was a seminal influence on the creation of genres like Grime and Dubstep.
In the years that followed he remixed high profile artists like Armand Van Helden, Ol’ Dirty Bastard and The Prodigy. He collaborated with members of 2 Live Crew, DJ Assault, Krafty Kuts, Freestylers, Stanton Warriors and many more.
In 2009 Deekline founded Hot Cakes, a talent agency that represents the elite of UK bass music DJ’s & Producers. Their roster features Montreal expat Jacky Murda aka Jack Beatz and his UK collective Chopstick Dubplate. Old school Montreal producers will remember Chopstick as being the only place in town to get a dubplate made of your tracks! I still have a few dubplates of my Breakbeat & DnB tracks that he pressed for me back in the early 2000s!
My personal favorite Deekline tracks are his collaborations with Ed Solo. Their remixes of classic dancehall reggae anthems always make it into my bass music DJ sets! You can find their collaborations on the popular JUNGLE CAKES releases. Some of his other hits include the garage track Got to Believe, the breakbeat track Deepa, the ragga jungle anthem Have Some Fun and the feel good jungle anthem Good to Have the Feelin with the legendary Tippa Irie!
Rounding out the rest of the bill are some killer local talent! DJ Jeska will kick the night off with some Bass House grooves. Since 2011 she built a solid rep with performances at venues & festivals like the Beachclub, Ile Soniq, Circus, Belmont, Newspeak and at the Théâtre Sans-Fils.
Next up is local duo Heavy GemZ who are one of my favorites! As solo DJ’s both Melodrastik & Dinzy are badass but together they are an unstoppable funky juggernaut! Their focus is to find the heaviest music gemz in all genres, at tempos between 130 to 190 bpm. Their B2B performances are relentless! Resistance is futile, you have no choice but to smile and dance motherfucker dance!
MELODRASTIKÂ is a mean lean breaks queen machine. Spinning since 2006, she was a key member of Planet Break, who for 15 years threw the best Breaks events in town. She has performed at countless club nights and festivals with her blend of Breakbeat, Electro, House & Garage.
DINZY is a member of the Night Time Freakency crew. Since 2016, she has been killing it in the underground rave scene and at festivals. She began spinning Bassline, Tech House & Bass House. Her evolution as an artist led her to expand her repertoire into Acid Techno, Deep Dubstep, DNB, Footwork & Juke.
Closing the evening we have local DnB producer XS. He is part of the Quite Nice Crew collective, Night Time Freakency and Desert Storm UK. I really enjoyed his set earlier this summer at Groove and Bass Festival. It was full of big screaming basslines and jungle beats!
Finally, the evening will be hosted by MC Beastieboxer. Known for his funny antics, he always gets the crowd going by hyping up the party people. One half of Montreal hip hop group Sizzle Twist, Beastieboxer has a profound love for all beats that are broken. Explicit Lyrics are guaranteed so leave your uptight prudishness at home!
The evening is organized by D32, a collective that creates events that combine urban art, graffiti & electronic music. Their mission is to promote the electronic scene and Montreal nightlife. Recently they shifted focus to specialize more in Breakbeats, Jungle and Dnb. To aid in this new mission, they added Melodrastik to their team. This event is their first collaboration where they bring in an international headliner.
