JOY Wellness Club Montreal | Inside the City’s New Social Spa

Wellness, Without Losing the Afternoon

Montreal knows how to spa. Steam, silence, phones in the locker and several hours lost somewhere between a sauna and a cold plunge. JOY is betting you don’t need the entire afternoon.

Located at 2200 Stanley Street in downtown Montreal, JOY Wellness Club Montreal brings together thermal rituals, cold plunges, fitness, recovery and something that has traditionally been missing from the spa equation: a social life.

For Best Kept MTL, that’s what makes JOY interesting. This isn’t simply another beautiful place to disappear for an afternoon. It’s built around making wellness part of everyday city life.

A 45-minute reset in the middle of Montreal

Founder Anne Joyal knows the traditional spa world well. Having helped build Strøm around slowing down and disconnecting, she hasn’t abandoned that philosophy with JOY. She’s adapted it to the way people actually live in the city. “We don’t always have several hours to unwind,” she explains.

Her answer is the 45 minute reset: enough time to move through a thermal ritual, get out of your head and reconnect with your body before heading back into your day. Instead of wellness being something you schedule a few times a year, Anne sees shorter sessions two or three times a week as something that can realistically become part of your routine.

And stepping inside certainly feels like leaving downtown behind. Concrete, warm wood, water and moody flashes of amber, blue and violet give the space an almost cinematic atmosphere. Part spa. Part wellness club. Slightly nightlife-coded. Very Montreal.

Sweat. Cold. Heat. Repeat.

Anne’s own ritual is refreshingly uncomplicated. Sauna first. Then comes the part most of us spend two minutes negotiating with ourselves about: the cold plunge. Breathe. Get through it.

She describes what happens afterward as “instant well-being, mental rest. Almost nirvana.” Then it’s into the thermal bath and, depending on the day, perhaps another heat-and-cold cycle.”

45 minutes later, you’re back in Montreal. Just hopefully a calmer version of yourself.

Wellness with a social life

Here’s where JOY Wellness Club Montreal gets more interesting.

Traditional spa etiquette has taught us to whisper, retreat and politely pretend we haven’t noticed the person sitting three feet away. JOY plays with the opposite idea. When we asked Anne what she thinks people are searching for right now, her answer was simple: “Community”

Remote work, screens and packed schedules may have made isolation easier, but Anne believes human contact itself can be restorative. She describes JOY as a kind of “third home”  somewhere between home and work where people can regularly recharge physically and mentally.

Your phone still stays in the locker. But disconnecting from technology doesn’t mean disconnecting from everyone around you.

Guides, staff, group sauna rituals and other guests all become part of the experience. That may sound like a small distinction, but it fundamentally changes the energy of a spa. Sometimes wellness can be social.

More than hot and cold

JOY also pushes beyond the traditional thermal circuit.

Fitness and HIIT training bring music, coaching and movement into the equation, while recovery experiences such as red-light therapy provide the counterbalance.

Anne herself combines HIIT sessions with red-light recovery, describing the workout as another way of getting out of her head: “follow the coach, listen to the music, move, sweat and push.” The point isn’t necessarily to do everything. It’s having different ways to reset depending on what your body — or your brain — needs that day.

From wellness trend to everyday habit

Anne also sees the industry moving well beyond beautiful spaces and good ambience. Her outlook for the next five years includes longevity, recovery, prevention and a much closer relationship between wellness and healthcare. Perhaps her most interesting prediction? “Proof, not promises”

She expects people to increasingly look for measurable results, with fundamentals such as sleep, cold, heat and breathwork becoming central rather than simply wellness extras.

The Best Kept MTL take

JOY Wellness Club Montreal feels designed around how Montrealers actually live: packed schedules, workouts squeezed between obligations, too much screen time and an increasing realization that recovery deserves a place on the calendar too. But its strongest idea may also be its simplest.

Wellness doesn’t always have to mean escaping people. Sometimes the people are part of the wellness.

Come for the sauna. Brave the cold plunge. Move. Recover. Switch off your phone. Maybe run into someone you know. And if your reset leaves you ready to explore the city again, continue the day with our guide to Montreal’s must-see art galleries and artists.

Because perhaps the next chapter of wellness isn’t about escaping Montreal. It’s about finding a better way to live in it ✨
