FLASH! A Night to Remember at McCord Stewart Museum’s 2024 Grand Ball

On Thursday, May 2nd, downtown Montreal witnessed an evening of nostalgic elegance and philanthropic fervor as a glamorous soirée unfurled its red carpet. Held at the iconic Le 9e, the Museum’s Grand Ball transformed the 9th floor of the Eaton Center, a revered architectural gem, into a dazzling venue that celebrated both the city’s cultural heritage and the vibrant world of photography and fashion.

After ascending to Le 9e, guests were met with a chic yet sober decor and programming meticulously designed by renowned artistic director Dick Walsh.

As attendees walked through the reception hallway, the air was filled with harp melodies, as well as lively discussions about the selected prints from the McCord Stewart Museum’s upcoming exhibition Portraits and Fashion – Quebec Photographers Beyond Borders.

The event began with a cocktail in the Île de France restaurant space at 6:30 p.m., where the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation and the clink of champagne glasses set the tone for an evening where Montreal’s elite gathered in their finest black-tie attire and evening dresses.

When the doors of the Grand Hall finally opened, the venue, illuminated by soft lighting that highlighted its art deco features, was revealed in all its splendor.

The tables were adorned with glass, candle and flower arrangements that complemented the evening’s sophisticated theme. Dinner was served at 8 p.m., and it was nothing short of a culinary masterpiece.

Each course was a testament to the creativity of the Brera Catering Company, paired perfectly with exquisite selections from SAQ that enhanced the flavors of the dishes.

The real magic, however, began as the clock struck 10, marking the commencement of the dance party. The floor was alive with the rhythms of DJ Frigid’s live set, which curated an eclectic mix that had everyone from industry moguls to fashion icons swaying under ballroom lights.

One cannot overlook the Grand Ball’s philanthropic achievement, which was a significant aspect of the event. Through the generosity of attendees and partners, the museum raised nearly $900,000. These funds are earmarked to support the museum’s mission of protecting and sharing our cultural legacy through innovative exhibitions and programs.

The heartfelt thanks expressed by the museum and its foundation to the members of the organizing committee and the honorary co-presidents — Bernard Leblanc, Emmanuelle Legault, and Delphine Le Serre, PhD — reflected the collective effort and passion that fueled this grand endeavor.

As the night drew to a close, the sentiment of accomplishment was palpable. The Grand Ball was a celebration of Montreal’s vibrant cultural scene, a recognition of the arts as a vital element of societal wellbeing. We would be remiss if we did not mention Madeleine Kojakian and the entire staff of Le 9e for their indispensable labor to the gala’s resounding success.
