I didn’t go to prom. I couldn’t; at the age of 13, I went missing and ended up living on the streets. I completely missed out on hight school and all of the milestones that come with being a teenager. I get “So Emotional” when I think about all of my “Shattered Dreams.” The loss of everyday teen things is something I have felt for most of my adult life. I learned to stop wondering what would have, could have been. Never in a million years did I dare to hope that I would get to experience prom … until now!
Thanks to the brilliance of L’Auberge Saint-Gabriel in Old Montreal, I’m finally getting my prom. We all are! And it’s not just an ordinary prom. It’s the kind of prom that will transport you back in time with 80s music, kitten heels, big hair, taffeta dresses, over-sized bows, corsages, colourful tuxedos, larger than life lapels and ruffled shirts. 1980’s Prom fashion trends
Dresses: Larger than life bows were all the rage. Dresses made from satin, velvet and/or taffeta. Floor length and tiered short skirts were both on trend along with off- the-shoulder, big puffy sleeves and spaghetti straps.
Accessories: Pearls, gems and gold. Large bead necklaces, disc clip-on earrings, hoop earrings, jelly bracelets, lace gloves, fishnet gloves, satin gloves, fingerless gloves, banana clips and hair scrunchies. Don’t forget the corsage for your wrist or to pin on your dress.
Hair: Big hair, mullets, crimped, curled, permed, punk, Jheri curl, side ponytails, Aquanet bangs and hi-top fade.
Make-up: Bright colourful eyeshadows – think neons, blues, purples and bright pinks, eyeliner all around, blue mascara and frosted lipsticks.
Tuxedos Trends: Tuxes with large lapels in contrasting colours, overly frilly dress shirts, big velvet bow ties, bolo ties were considered rad.
