Intangible Forms | Red Hot Immersive Exhibit @ New City Gas
Dramatic, visceral, and operatic in nature, Intangible Forms is an immersive audio-visual experiment conceived by Japanese multimedia artist Shohei Fujimoto. After a successful debut in New York, the exhibition – presented by Produkt and Artechouse – takes place from January 27 to April 10, 2022, at the New City Gas complex in Montreal’s Griffintown.
As Quebec society struggles through curfews and lockdowns to emerge into our familiar, yet forever changed, surroundings, this hour-long experience – composed of seven parts, including the central laser installation and two artworks exclusive to the Montreal edition of the exhibition – similarly takes visitors on a journey into both the known and unknown.
Through minimalism and the highlighting of patterns created by the repetitive, modular rhythms of the world around us, Fujimoto’s Intangible Forms invite visitors to connect to their core humanity.
Set in a meditative soundscape inspired by the powerful quiet of Shinto shrines in the mountains of Japan, the centerpiece performance utilizes hundreds of safe lasers, haze, strobe light, and moving lights to entrance visitors in seeing the intangible as tangible.
As Fujimoto put it:
I’ve been trying to generate virtual consciousness and, in extension, virtual life in this work, triggering a deeper sense of humanity in ourselves.
This key idea is continued through a series of six more separate multi-sensory works spread across the 14,000 square foot space that Montreal’s New City Gas complex offers. Check out the Vimeo video at the bottom of this article to see and hear the New York edition of this luminous exhibition!
