8 Shows with Serious Binge-Watching Potential on Netflix Canada: July 2020

Binge-watching is the perfect way to practice social distancing and spend more time at home. No matter what your hobbies are, you likely still watch a couple shows on Netflix. Maybe you even have your favourite shows running in the background while you’re cooking, or painting. Binge-watching shows have undoubtedly been a popular pastime activity for many of us. It requires no effort, and a good show can captivate our attention for days at a time. Everyone who has a Netflix account has probably watched most shows on the streaming service.

With new series being added every month, it can be hard to catch up! Lucky for you, we’ve compiled a list of five shows that will most definitely get you through July. Here are five new Netflix shows that have serious binge-watching potential.

1. Unsolved Mysteries

In need of a show that’ll make you think? Wanna unleash your inner detective and hear about some real mysteries? Look no further. The iconic late 80s show, Unsolved Mysteries has made a digital comeback. New episodes are on Netflix right now.

Confusing disappearances, puzzling murders, and baffling paranormal encounters are all re-enacted for your viewing pleasure. Many news outlets are even claiming that the revival of the series has brought in some credible tips. A whole show about unsolved mysteries is bound to be interesting.

It’ll also give you something to think about besides the current state of the world. Get your mind off things for a while and start solving some mysteries! Who knows? Maybe you know some vital clues no one else knows.

2.Say I Do

True crime shows not your thing? Looking for something a bit more light-hearted? Check out Say I Do. From the producers of “Queer Eye”, this show is all about weddings. Follow eight couples from their proposals to their weddings.

The catch is that they only have one week to do it all. Yes, you read that correctly. They have seven days to propose and get married. An interior designer, a fashion designer, and a chef are given the task of providing couples their dream weddings in less than a week.

Dubbed “a rollercoaster of emotions”, this show will have you on the edge of your seat. Witness some truly speedy planning, and see some lucky love-birds tie the knot in this addictive Netflix series. 

3. Animal Kingdom

Technically season 4 came out in June, but a lot of people don’t know yet so we included it in our top July picks! Watch this family get into more trouble with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. These charming bad boys are under the strict tough love of  their grandmother “smurf”  played by Ellen Barkin as the Queen-king-pin of this petty crime family empire.  Spoiler: she ain’t your typical grandma!

See Ann Martin’s beloved books from the 80s get a 20th-century makeover. This captivating series follows a group of teenage girls who form their very own babysitting business.

Starring Alicia Silverstone from the 90s cult-classic “Clueless” and Mark Feuerstein from Prison Break, this show offers a nostalgic and sweet take on the lives of a couple of local friends. You don’t need to be a teenager to enjoy this sweet and thoughtful series. It is pretty light-hearted and will leave you with a warm feeling in your stomach.

4. Stateless

A more serious, political show to keep in mind is Stateless. Co-created and co-starred in by two-time academy award winner Cate Blanchett, this show takes a look at Australia’s immigration system. A cult-escapee, a refugee, an office worker, and a bureaucrat find themselves in a detention center.

The show is based partly on the scandal of Australian permanent resident Cornelia Rau’s unlawful detention in the early 2000s and offers insight on what really goes on in detention centers. If you are looking for a show that portrays social and political issues in an ever-changing world, give Stateless a try. 

5. Ju-On: Origins

Haven’t had a good scare in a while? Wanna lose sleep and jump at every noise you hear when you’re alone? Ju-On: Origins is the perfect show for you.

Part of the infamous Japanese franchise “ The Grudge”, this series gives us some background information on how the franchise started. It explains the origins of the spirit of the haunted house, and the events leading up its eventual reign of terror.

Involving different characters and storylines, this series also portrays historical events such as Chernobyl. If you like a good horror movie or are a massive fan of the “Grudge”, this six-part series is for you!

6. Street Food: Latin America 

Calling all foodies! This captivating docuseries captures street-food in different Latin American cities. Chefs tell their own tales and explain their delicious offerings to an audience of watering mouths. Arriving July 21st, this show is definitely perfect for anyone wishing to learn more about cuisines from various cultures.

7. Deadwind: Season 2

8. Cable Girls 

With all this free time on our hands, it may just be the perfect time to get lost in another period-piece. Cable Girls takes place in 1920s Spain and follows the lives of women working at Spain’s first-ever national telephone company.

Portraying a time when views on women, their rights, and their presence in the work-force was rapidly evolving, Cable Girls provides its viewers with a great look at the lives of women in a time of major social and economic change.

The historical drama spans over five seasons, with its last episodes arriving this July. Although the series has reached its conclusion, there are still many episodes for new viewers to get through. So put on your historical glasses and time-travel to roaring 20s Spain.
