2019 MONTREAL WINE FAIRS RECAP

Wine tasting in Montreal is always an exciting time. October is the harbinger of shorter, darker days. But it also marks the start of a very exciting season in Montreal: wine and spirits tasting show season.

At the forefront of a thriving industry, the following events allow Quebecers to meet producers from around the world for a unique tasting experience. Here are the highlights of a team collaboration between myself and my partner/wine connoisseur Lucie LeBel-Perron, for awakening our senses in wine tasting!

1- SOUTH AFRICAN WINE GATHERING AND TASTINGS

The gathering takes place in the magnificent Scena room, located in the Old Port, and is organized by the High Commission of South Africa in Canada and South African Wines; 350 years of heritage! Over 200 wines produced with a commitment to high quality, a beautiful vision of sustainability.

An impressive setting goes a long way. The warm and musical lounge atmosphere settled us into the place in no time. We were quickly made aware, from table to table, of the presence of informed and curious tasters participating in the gathering. In addition, the generous table of charcuterie, bread, croutons and marinated vegetables set the stage for a great food and wine pairing.

A few of our favourite wine tastings in Montreal:

  • Simonsig Estate, Chenin Blanc “Avec Chêne” 2017, Stellenbosch, South Africa (contact agency founder Dominique Gagné). Import info here. This full-bodied Chenin Blanc is aged 11 months in oak barrels and is a true gastronomic wine whether paired with fish, white meat or spicy dishes. Simply incredible.

  • Rustenberg Wines, chardonnay Stellenbosch 2018, South Africa. Well balanced, aged 10 months in oak, fresh acidity. Available at the SAQ for $20. More information on the wine distillery here.

  • Bottega Family Wines, Idiom barbera 2014, Stellenbosch, South Africa. The young wines planted in 2006 already give this one a distinguished style that presents typical varietal aromas of dark red fruits and vanilla with delicate notes of cherries. Complexity and depth are the hallmarks of this vintage.
  • Vondeling Wines, Chardonnay 2018, Stellenbosch, South Africa. Import information here. A full-bodied wine with great tension on the palate. Crisp apple and chalky citrus are infused with soft layers of crème brûlée, spun sugar and floral potpourri. It would be perfect with grilled fish, creamy Alfredo pasta and salads. The freshness of the wine also makes it ideal for mild and aromatic curries.

2- RAW WINE, THE ARTISANAL WINE FAIR

The Montreal edition of Raw Wines took place on October 24 and 25, from 10am to 6pm at Salon Richmond 1861 in Little Burgundy. The international event also takes place in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Berlin and London each year.

To kick things off, RAW WINE couldn’t have chosen a more fitting venue than the former Saint-Joseph Church, which hosts us each year for an unforgettable wine tasting experience in Montreal. Originally built by the Sulpicians in 1861, we have access to two floors to scout and sample wines from over 100 natural winemakers from around the world. Newly engaged wine tasters, as well as connoisseurs, are welcome to attend this event. No wine pairings are served inside, but food trucks are parked outside the building.

All wines featured at RAW WINE must meet strict criteria, but the basic tenets of the philosophy behind the “movement” are simple:
