Over the weekend, we got a very interesting submission. We received an intriguing audio-visual package from a PR agency called Cut Above PR with none of the expected associated music identities such as Facebook pages or press kits. The website itself for the single “We Are The Hearts” is  a beautiful and unusual motion graphic art piece with bold words that reveal against the evocative animated background. The music is dreamy, alternative, trip hop which sounds like it could be either terrible or really really great. It’s really really great.

The first thing I enjoyed being a creative director, was the EXGF logo. A perfect block of symmetry and a unique font. This band really works their branding and image, creating something that feels luxurious and anonymous like one of the early We Are The Oracle parties. In Fact, it’s assumed that the “creatives” behind EXGF do things like find an abandoned chateau, fill it up with white sand and an army of votives and have an impromptu cocktail party for those who were able to figure out their cryptic Tumblr clues.

EXGF appeared out of nowhere in June of 2014, and their contagious debut single ‘Idle Hands’ shot to #1 on Hype Machine’s popular chart, to much industry and fan acclaim. Only the collective’s Instagram and artistic websites provide any insight into who they are. Documenting the outrageous parties and soirees of an underground culture developing in the hotel penthouses, abandoned warehouses, and rooftops from Los Angeles to Paris.

“We Are The Hearts” speaks of triumph, defeat, war, spirituality – but above all an indefatigable and profound belief in the power of ourselves. It proclaims: “We will never be bought and sold… the future runs through OUR bones.”
Still questions remain — Who is EXGF? What is EXGF? But perhaps the collective chooses to embrace this mystery, placing emphasis on the spirit and meaning of their offerings, rather than the creatives behind them.
