The State Fair of Texas | Top 5 things to do at #BIGTEX 2016
For those of you unfamiliar with The State Fair of Texas, it is an annual event held in Dallas at the historic Fair Park. It has taken place every year since 1886, except for varying periods during the 1st & 2nd World War. Typically it begins the last Friday in September and ends 24 days later. While the State Fair of Texas considers quantifying its official attendance figures too much of a hassle, it is still consistently recognized as one of the most highly attended and best fairs in America with approximated crowds in the millions…
So now you know what it is, but not what to do! We have gone through every possible event this year from food to fun and we have narrowed down a list of the top 5 things to do at the State Fair of Texas, aka BIGTEX 2016.
1- Daily Wine Tasting – Of course!
The State Fair of Texas sets itself apart from other venues of its kind by housing a wine garden that features only Texas wines. The Wine Garden, located on Nimitz Drive across from the Creative Arts Building, features three different wineries each day and offers guests the choice of buying a small taste, glass or bottle of wine. Check it out!
2- Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel – Rome to Dallas tour!
3- Best Taste – Fried Jell-O® Created by Ruth Haunts
For the first time in Big Tex Choice Awards history, America’s favorite childhood dessert is given a State Fair of Texas twist! A classic cherry-flavored Jell-O in a panko-crusted breading, flash-fried to perfection, and then dusted with powdered sugar. Prepared with a tasty topping of whipped cream and a cherry garnish, this dish has the perfect amount of crunch to compliment the jiggle. Check it out!
4- Deep Fried Bacon Burger Dog Slider on a Stick by Brent & Juan Reaves
Meat lovers are in for a treat with this tantalizing triple threat. A miniature, hand made seasoned ground beef patty is stuffed with shredded cheddar cheese, bacon, and an all-beef hot dog on a Hawaiian roll. It is then placed on a skewer topped with a pickle, dipped in a tempura batter and deep fried to perfection. Every Bacon Burger Dog is served on a bed of shoe string fries with ranch dipping sauce. Check it out!
5- Make sure to Slither your way to The Snakes of Texas!
A perfect spot to stop for a little rest and relaxation, Texas Discovery Gardens offers entertainment the whole family will enjoy! Local organic gardens can be found outside, while the indoor section features a tropical butterfly house with hundreds of free-flying exotic butterflies. The Snakes of Texas! exhibit returns again, including native reptiles of all shapes and sizes. Daily events include butterfly releases at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., along with monarch tagging demos at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Snake feeding talks are held on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. Open daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
