Did you know Montreal has a Clown Festival? NOT your average clowns
Montreal Loves it’s Festivals and a Clown Festival is on that list
The Montreal Clown Festival is located in the clown and circus capital of Canada, Montreal will play host to the 3rd annual Festival des Clown de Montreal from September 12-16, 2018.
Partnering with Montreal indie theatre darling and Fringe Festival producers, MainLine Theatre, this year’s clown festival will bring together seasoned and emerging performers featuring a spectrum of clown styles.
Headlining this year’s festival is the physical comedy Snooze by Francoise-Guillaume Leblanc (Quebec, QC), a clown with over 500 Cirque de Soliel performances under his belt; Coop les ViVaces, a collective of seasoned Montrealers performing a feminist bouffon show: Les Zoubliettes; and Canada’s top clown-sister duo Morro and Jasp.
The Clown Festival is a quadruple billed show
The festival program also includes four double-billed shows presenting an array of genres from slapstick (Mariage RSVP); dance (Les Darling Queens); clown melodrama (Woes of Living a Life in Peril); physical comedy (Ralph; The Philipe & Lucinda Show); visual delights (Le Ciel Rue); and funny puppets (Beaver Dreams – La fièvre du castor).
The Clown Festival offers free events and a contest
Several free events are also programmed throughout the bilingual festival. A panel discussion on women in clowning featuring a panel of artists lead by Sonia Norris (Thursday September 13th, 9:30PM); and the popular talent show, Le Grand Imbécile (Friday September 14th, 9PM) where the winner of the contest gets a trophy and a 15 minute spot in the following year’s festival. Last year’s winner, Ivan Pavel Eterovic Diaz, returns to Montreal with his full body puppets (Rosa and Lucho) all the way from Santiago, Chile!
The festival kicks off with the Opening Gala hosted by the sassy Mme Zazou (Wednesday September 12th 8PM- Free). The closing cabaret will feature artists in the festival and will pull in other clowns who have been producing their own Caberets throughout the year. The Closing Cabaret is directed by clown musical-personality Soizik (Sunday September 16th, 8PM – $15.)
