Don’t be a #TAGWhore | It’s digital desperate!

I have noticed this especially on the ever growing INSTAGRAM base of filtered smartphone photography mania. In a desperate attempt to grow followers as fast as possible, a lot of trendy tags have emerged:

#follow @TagsForLikes #f4f #followme #TagsForLikes.COM #TFLers #followforfollow #follow4follow #teamfollowback #followher #followbackteam #followhim #followall #followalways #followback #me #love #pleasefollow @TagsForLikes #follows #follower #following

With the exception of #love, #me these tags are so digitally desperate that they WILL turn off the followers that you truly want which are quality popular accounts with a large follower base. Sure, you will get hundreds of teenagers with low self esteem following you back for instant ego parallel – but you will not be growing your account with your true audience in mind. If you are simply a regular Joe who just wants attention – this works. If you are a band, brand or anyone who wishes to use this platform seriously here is some advice:

  1. Stick to tags which pertain to your photos #sunset #dogrun #selfie etc..
  2. You can use popular tags which are trending and have a huge followers base but keep them to a minimum. Some of the less desperate ones are #igers #instalove #picoftheday #cool #love #iphonesia #instagood #cute MORE HERE
  3. Try to limit your tags to 5-8 tags. Having 50 tags looks ridiculous. I know you want to reach out to lots of people, but you can do that and be #cool at the same time 😉
  4. Don’t add tags that have nothing to do with your photo in order to sneak into a tag category. #pugsofinstagram with your Jack Russell
  5. Be very careful of spelling, typos and tag fails like #TGIF when it is Thursday!
